HOW CAN ER24 HELP?
Under the General Safety Regulation 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 an employer is responsible for the following:
An employer shall take all reasonable steps that are necessary under the circumstances to ensure that persons at work receive prompt first aid treatment in the case of injury or emergency.
Where more than five employees are employed at a workplace, the employer shall provide a first aid box or boxes at or near the workplace which shall be available and accessible for the treatment of injured persons at that workplace.
An employer shall affix a prominent notice or sign in a conspicuous place in the workplace, indicating where the first aid box or boxes are kept as well as the of the person in charge of such first aid box or Section 37 of the OSH Act requires that the CEO is expected to take reasonable steps to prevent all potential risks materialising.
This section prescribes that the CEO will be liable for all the transgressions of employees and contractors unless all reasonable steps have been take to try to prevent the foreseeable risks from becoming a reality.
Where more than 10 employees are employed at a workplace, the employer shall ensure that for every group of up to 50 employees or 100 for offices, at least one person is available during normal working hour who is in possession of a valid certificate of competence in first aid.
A comprehensive emergency evacuation plan of the premises ready for inspection.
Plans of the layout of the premises and escape routes must be put up permanently at all exits and strategic points on the premises.
Drill twice a year, with 21 days’ notice to staff
Action plans must be available to all staff members to ensure that every staff member knows exactly what to do in an emergency.
Emergency telephone numbers and a bomb threat questionnaire must be at all phones.
