Meet Daneel Scheepers, Branch Manager of ER24 Rustenburg.
Having joined ER24 in April 2013 as a Basic Life Support medic at the Johannesburg Central branch in Kempton Park, Gauteng, Daneel Scheepers now manages the ER24 Rustenburg branch. She reflects on her career journey.
Emergency medical services is my calling
Years ago, I was working in an administrative role for a small transport company and was tired of sitting in an office. I wanted a career change and knew I’d enjoy being out in the field, assisting people in need. After qualifying as a Basic Life Support (BLS) medic, I knew I’d found my calling in emergency medical services. I thrive on the adrenaline and appreciate the fact that every working day is different. The more you see and experience on the road as a medic, the more you learn. Every scenario presents new challenges – and working well together with all the various emergency services is vital. No one can call emergency services boring!
One of my first memories in the operational space was responding to a call where two pit bulls had attacked a woman. The injuries were so severe, we thought doctors would need to amputate her arm. Miraculously, after numerous skin grafts, she regained full sensory function. Three months after the attack, she came to thank me in person. That is what makes this work worthwhile.
The value of mentorship
In 2015, I became an Intermediate Life Support (ILS) medic. The following year, Geoffrey Boulton became Branch Manager at ER24 Johannesburg Central and has since been my greatest mentor. Like a father figure, Geoff encourages me to push myself, shares his vast knowledge, and offers valuable life advice.
When I wanted a bigger challenge at work, he encouraged me to do a business management course. I then became more involved with marketing and managerial tasks as his “second-in-command". I was appointed Branch Manager of Rustenburg in January 2024 and still value Geoff’s mentorship. He’s inspired me to assist others too, and I love sharing my knowledge with those who are willing to go the extra mile.
Duties of an ER24 branch manager
As branch manager, I oversee all operations, including leading, training, and motivating staff, implementing marketing initiatives, and ensuring compliance with regulations and company policies. I manage the branch budget, build relationships with the community and businesses, and promote ER24’s services while educating companies on the importance of first aiders.
Branch managers usually work in an office setting, but the role requires frequent interaction with patients, staff, and community members. I find this an amazing part of the job as I always enjoy getting out from behind the desk. When our ambulances are busy, I’m always available to respond to a call and treat patients.
Challenges and rewards
Overall, being a branch manager is a challenging yet rewarding role that offers numerous opportunities for growth and development in various aspects of business management. I have applied for another managerial course as I don’t want to stagnate; I want to move up within ER24.
The challenges come from managing conflicts, different performance levels, and low employee motivation, which sometimes require tough decisions. This role involves long hours and a lot of energy. I’ve learned to listen to my team’s concerns, and it’s inspiring and rewarding to see them grow.
My advice to paramedics aiming for a branch manager role is to give it your best, do it with a smile, and stay humble. The effort you put in today will shape your future. If you go the extra mile, ER24 will do the same for you. Good performance is rewarded, and there are always opportunities to study and grow. Take advantage of every chance you get.
