ER24's sensitive approach to supporting survivors of sexual trauma at the University of Stellenbosch provides resources and safe spaces to survivors.
At a time when they are most distressed and vulnerable, survivors of sexual trauma deserve compassionate, respectful, and professional care. ER24 provides more than medical assistance to survivors at universities and other learning institutions across South Africa; we also offer a safe and supportive space where they can find the help they need. Find out about the protocol that ER24 follows to support survivors:
Meet at a safe space
Survivors are requested to meet ER24 responders at a designated safe space for survivors. In the case of the University of Stellenbosch, this is the university's Psychological and Psychotherapy Service (UPPS) at 49 Victoria Street. This ensures a safe, supportive environment for the survivor.
Preservation of evidence
Survivors are advised not to shower or change clothing until they meet with ER24 personnel. Preserving evidence is crucial for any potential legal proceedings.
Ensuring safety
If the survivor is unable to come to the designated safe space, ER24 requests security or protection services to accompany them. In case of safety concerns, protection services can remain with the survivor and ER24 personnel.
Initial assessment
ER24 professionals provide immediate care and support to the survivor, prioritising their wellbeing.
Medical examination
ER24 contacts the Office of the District Surgeon to report the sexual trauma and request a medical examination. The District Surgeon's examination is a critical step in providing the survivor with the necessary medical attention and evidence collection.
Crisis supervisor
The crisis supervisor is contacted to provide additional support for the survivor.
Accompaniment
ER24 personnel accompany the survivor to the offices of the District Surgeon.
Medical examination
ER24 personnel allow the District Surgeon to complete the physical examination, respecting the survivor's privacy during this process.
Documenting the interaction
Every interaction between ER24 personnel and the survivor is documented verbatim. This is essential for the "first report" in any potential court proceedings.
Crisis intervention
ER24 provides crisis intervention to help survivors cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the traumatic event.
Support for friends and bystanders
If indicated, ER24 will also provide support for friends or bystanders affected by the incident.
Police inquiry
ER24 waits until the police inquiry is completed, ensuring the survivor's safety and wellbeing throughout.
Medication and support
ER24 ensures that the survivor receives necessary medications, such as antiretrovirals, the "morning after" pill, and antibiotics, and takes them as prescribed.
Follow-up appointment
A follow-up appointment is scheduled for the next day, and ER24 will call the survivor as indicated.
Attendance at the District Surgeon’s appointment
ER24 helps ensure the survivor attends the follow-up appointment with the District Surgeon for ongoing care and support.
Legal action
In cases where the incident qualifies as a crime, ER24 contacts the chairperson of the university’s sexual harassment committee, ensuring that appropriate legal action is taken.
