Alcohol and substance abuse are common among young people and it’s not unusual for students to find themselves facing such issues. ER24’s Campus Services provide 24-hour support for students in need, offering a lifeline for those dealing with substance-related challenges. In this article we explore the path to recovery and the help available on campus.

Seek help for substance abuse

Reaching out for support is a crucial first step on the path to recovery from substance abuse. ER24's Campus Services team understands the unique challenges students face, and our protocol for substance abuse situations is designed to provide immediate assistance while ensuring the wellbeing of the individual.

Aim of the ER24 protocol

The main objectives of ER24's Substance Abuse Protocol are to stabilise the individual's condition, assess the situation thoroughly, and develop a plan for appropriate action. This may involve exploring various options to address the substance abuse issue effectively.

Evaluating the situation

When responding to substance abuse cases, our team evaluates:

  • The substance used
  • The extent of the substance abuse
  • Family history, which may provide insight into the individual’s predisposition to addiction.

Drug overdose and alcohol poisoning

In situations involving drug overdose or alcohol poisoning, immediate medical attention is critical. These are considered medical emergencies, and the individual should be taken to a hospital for necessary medical care. This might require treatment for withdrawal symptoms and “fits”.

Handling intoxicated individuals

People who are intoxicated may act erratically and our team understands the need to approach them with understanding and respect. Alcohol often serves as a mask for underlying medical, social, or personality problems. Our protocol consists of:

  • Close observation
  • Speaking and listening to the person
  • Minimising physical contact and maintaining a safe distance
  • Avoiding sharp lights and offering food and non-alcoholic beverages
  • While working as a team, only one therapist should interact with the individual
  • Communicating clearly and simply without making false promises.

Safety and wellbeing

Substance abuse situations are sometimes linked to more profound issues such as sexual harassment or violence. Our team evaluates the possibility of such scenarios and ensures the individual’s safety is a top priority.

Preventing harm

To keep the person safe, it’s crucial not to leave them alone, as they could be at risk of choking on their vomit or other hazards. Seek help from friends or family, who can provide additional support and guidance.
